At 3am EDT on 2 May 2026, Spirit Airlines ceased operations after 34 years. Often described as the airline that America loved to hate, Spirit Airlines was an ultra low cost carrier, offering low fares with everything else costing extra.

In this blog post, I take a look at the rise and fall of Spirit Airlines. From its early days as a charter tour operator, to its well known ultra low cost carrier model. I will also look at the many struggles the airline faced after Covid-19, particularly in its final years as well as what the collapse of Spirit Airlines means for the aviation industry.
