On 30 June 2025, Oman Air joined the oneworld alliance as the 15th member of the alliance. In this blog post I will take a look at what this means for Oman Air and the oneworld alliance.
About the oneworld alliance
The oneworld airline alliance was founded in 1999 by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas. The idea was unveiled at a press conference in 1998, but the alliance only became operational on the 1st February 1999. Since then the oneworld alliance has grown with members joining but also leaving the alliance for various reasons. Today the alliance has 15 member airlines with Oman Air being the latest to join on the 30 June 2025. The member airlines are: Alaskan Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines. Oman Air joined the alliance on the 30 June 2025. Keep an eye out for one of my upcoming blog posts where I will take a more in depth look at the oneworld alliance.

About Oman Air
Oman Air began operations in 1993 to serve important domestic routes. Based in Muscat, it has since undergone rapid growth and expansion. Today, Oman Air is a major international carrier, connecting cities around to world to Oman with its fleet of modern, fuel efficient aircraft.
The Oman Air fleet
At the time of writing Oman Air has 40 aircraft in its fleet, made up of 7 types of aircraft. When it comes to Boeing aircraft, the airline has 6 Boeing 737-800's, 4 Boeing 737-900's, 15 Boeing 737-8 MAX's, 1 Boeing 787-8 and 8 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner's. On the Airbus side, Oman Air has 4 A330-200 aircraft and 2 A330-300 aircraft.
The Oman Air route network
Oman Air offers a wide route network. According to oneworld data, the airlines flies to 41 destinations in 20 countries. At the time of writing, Oman Air has many flights scheduled. These flights are to Europe; where it flies to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Rome and Istanbul. Interestingly, the airline still flies to Russia with flights to Moscow. Many airlines, mostly North American and European airlines are no longer allowed to enter Russian airspace as a result of sanctions as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The airline also has scheduled flights to Africa to Zanzibar and Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania. The airline also has a large presence in the Middle East, India and Asia. Interestingly, Oman Air has no scheduled flights to North or South America or to Australia. In fact, there are no scheduled flights between Oman and countries in North and South America and Australia. However, fellow oneworld member airline, Qatar, has a large presence in all of these areas and given the close proximity between Oman and Qatar, passengers wanting to travel between Oman and any of these destinations will likely be able to get to their destination after only one stop in Qatar. Perhaps we will see Oman Air expand to these destinations in the near future.

Oman Air and the oneworld alliance
In June 2021, the airline revealed that it planned to apply to the oneworld alliance with Qatar Airways to act as its sponsor. Then, in June 2022, Oman Air formally revealed that it was going to join the oneworld alliance. The airline joined the alliance on 30 June 2025.
Before the Oman Air joined oneworld, the alliance stated that
"We are excited for Oman Air to join the oneworld alliance soon, bringing oneworld benefits to Oman Air customers, expanding our global network with exciting new destinations and opening the unique beauty of Oman to more travellers."
Statement from the oneworld communications team.
The strategic importance of Oman Air to the oneworld alliance
The oneworld alliance will benefit from Oman Air joining. Despite Qatar Airways also being a member of the oneworld alliance, the alliance will benefit from another carrier in the Middle East. This will enhance competition will other large carriers in the region such as Turkish Airlines (a member of Star Alliance) and Saudia (a member of SkyTeam). The alliance will aim to also offer an alternatives to Emirates and Etihad.
Benefits for Oman Air and its passengers
By joining the oneworld alliance, Oman Air receives many benefits. Oman Air and its passengers will have access to a global network of over 900 destinations across oneworld member airlines. The airline will also benefit from increased visibility and prestige through its alliance membership. This means that Oman Air will have the potential to boost its premium traffic with code share opportunities. However, Oman Air will not be the only one who benefits from the oneworld alliance. Passengers and frequent fliers with Oman Air will receive oneworld benefits including priority boarding, lounge access and tier recognition. oneworld passengers will also benefit from the increased route options that Oman Air brings to the alliance, especially to Oman, India and southeast Asia, a market where Oman Air has a large presence.
Regional and global connectivity
Joining the oneworld alliance will strengthen Oman Air's position as a growing hub linking Europe, the Middle East and southeast Asia. Additionally, the airline will be able to offer smoother connections to its destinations in India and east Africa where Oman Air has a strong presence.
