On 18 October 2026, Lufthansa retired its final A340-600 aircraft after 23 years of service.

Flight LH419 departed Washington D.C. for Frankfurt on 18 October 2026 at 17:55 local time, arriving the next morning after a flight time of 8 hours, 5 minutes. Passengers on board this final flight, many who were on it for this specific reason, received a specially produced farewell booklet as a gift.

Lufthansa placed its first order for Airbus A340-600s in December 1997 and the A340-600 joined the A340-200 and A340-300 which were already in service. At the time ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) for transatlantic flights were not as flexible as they are today so the airline opted for the four engine A340 instead of the twin engine Boeing 777.

The airline increased its ten firm orders to seventeen in June 2001 and the Lufthansa A340-600 fleet eventually reached 24 aircraft. The A340-600 entered commercial service with Lufthansa on 15 December 2003 on its Frankfurt - Buenos Aires - Santiago de Chile route, replacing the Boeing 747-400s which previously operated a Frankfurt - Sao Paulo - Buenos Aires route.

However, North America was the main destination for Lufthansa's A340-600s. Destinations such as New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver were major destinations for the type although it also operated to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The A340-600 will be replaced by newer aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. However, Lufthansa still operates eleven of the smaller Airbus A340-300 which it plans to retire by 2027.
